FAR 556 - Walter Biggs Art and Fine Bronze Sculpture

Biggs, Walter (1886-1968), New York/Virginia. Oil on canvas of two figures, young woman in ball gown standing within doorway with fanlight, man in dark waistcoat with top hat and cane in hand bending to kiss her hand. Wrought iron fence detail in foregrounds. Shades of blue and green predominant. Soiled, with heavy varnish layer, possible minor inpaint. Biggs was a member of the National Academy of Design, the American Watercolor Society, the Salmagundi Club, and Allied Artists of America. He was also named to the Illustrators Society Hall of Fame. Biggs studied with William Merritt Chase at the New York School of Art, and was a roommate with noted artist George Bellows at the Ashcan School of painting in New York, where they studied under founder Robert Henri. Romain (Ert�) De Tirtoff (1892-1990). Cold painted and gilt bronze sculpture of fabulous art deco female in flowing evening gown holding a large fan. Artist signature etched into bronze cast, numbered 392/500, dated 1989 with Seven Arts Ltd., London foundry mark. Purchased from Dyansen Gallery in 1989. Estimated value from most recent available appraisals $9,000 - $16,000. She sits on a beveled round mirror with custom cut felt pad. - Lot 4 Dimension: 19H 11W

Alfred Tibor (1920-2017). Bonded bronze abstract expressionism sculpture, number 43. Acquired from Studio T, Columbus, Ohio. Marble base measures 11.125 inches by 12.25 inches. Tibor was born in Hungary and was a Holocaust survivor. In his own words he wanted to create art to capture and evoke human emotions. This work was the highest priced work sold at auction following Biggs death, and was bought by prominent Salem, Virginia architect G.L. Mattern. It has been consigned by his heirs. Extensive contemporary print material accompanies the piece. Biggs was a member of the National Academy of Design, the American Watercolor Society, the Salmagundi Club, and Allied Artists of America.
